The Lost Boyz may have grown up along crooked streets, but, according to one group member, they're now striving for more than ghetto celebrity status. "Everything I do now is for my kids," Mr. Cheeks says. "My life is based on feeding them and makin' sure their future is secure." Consisting of Freaky Tah, Pretty Lou, and DJ Spigg Nice, as well as Mr. Cheeks, the Lost Boyz are also about telling the truth. "Basically we're tryin' to bring rap back to its essence, take it back to the soul. We make songs about life. We don't make songs about movies,"says Mr. Cheeks. In spite of that fact, many of the tracks on Legal Drug Money, the Lost Boyz' debut, move like sonic pictures. In "Lifestyles of the Rich & Shameless," about inner-city hustling ("Some die with a name, some die nameless") and "Renee," a narrative about a downed ghetto princess, the rappers create street characters against a backdrop of drama and emotion. "The majority of our stories are real," Freaky Tah says. "Ain't gonna front and say we experienced all of them, but all of the stuff we say was either seen by us, witnessed by us, or done by us." The Lost Boyz decided to trade in their lives of crime for careers writing rhymes. "Sometimes ya gotta stray off onto other pathways to get to where you gotta go," said Mr. Cheeks. "You can't always follow the straight and narrow." | |||||||||||||||||
